How do I save my first capture?
Open Capture, type in the field, then press the submit button. Your note appears in the current list. You can save a thought first and choose its final app later.
Open a saved capture to view or edit it. Use its export action to send it to another app. In Settings, open Tour to see the introduction again.
Which devices can I use? Is there a Windows or web app?
Capture is available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. There is no Windows, Android, or browser version of the Capture inbox.
Use the App Store listing to check the current system requirements for your device. Some features, such as Voice Notes, need a newer operating system.
Do I need a Capture account?
No. You do not need to create a Capture account. Capture uses your Apple iCloud account to sync between your devices. Use the same Apple Account on each device if you want the same captures on them.
How do I report a problem or request a feature?
Email capture@sir.studio. For a problem, include your device model, operating system version, Capture version, and the steps that cause it. Add the exact error message if there is one.
For export problems, name the destination. For sync problems, say which device created the capture and which device did not receive it. Remove private notes and access tokens from screenshots before you send them.
You can also open Roadmap in Capture Settings to view or submit feature requests.
Sync and storage
Why are my captures not syncing between devices?
Capture syncs through iCloud. Try these checks in order:
- Check that each device uses the same Apple Account and that iCloud is available for Capture.
- Connect each device to the internet and open Capture on each one.
- Save a small test capture on each device. Check which devices receive each test.
- Install the latest Capture update and allow time for iCloud to transfer the changes.
If the problem continues, contact support. Include your device models, operating system versions, Capture versions, and the direction in which sync fails. Keep any device that still has the missing data intact.
Does iCloud sync require Capture Pro?
No. iCloud sync does not require Capture Pro. The free capture limit and iCloud sync are separate.
If an existing capture is missing on another device, follow the sync checks. Buying Pro is not a sync repair step.
Does Capture work offline?
You can save captures on your device without an internet connection. iCloud sync needs a connection to transfer changes to other devices.
Voice Notes can work offline after you download the required language model. Exports that use an online service need an internet connection. If a saved change disappears, contact support with the device and app versions and the steps that caused the problem.
Where are my captures stored? Can I turn analytics off?
Your captures stay on your devices and in your own iCloud account for sync. Capture never sends their contents to Sir Studio. We cannot see or access your captures, and we do not want access to your personal data.
When you choose to export a capture, its contents go to the destination you select.
In Settings > Privacy, turn off Share analytics if you do not want to share usage analytics. Capture's analytics setting does not share the contents of your captures.
Read the privacy policy for more information.
Why does the iPhone badge not update after a capture on Apple Watch?
The badge depends on the data available on your iPhone. Background sync and badge updates can be delayed, especially when Capture is not running. Open Capture on the iPhone to let it receive the new data.
In Settings > Notification, check Notification badge and the selected List. Also allow notifications and badges for Capture in your device settings.
If the capture itself is missing after you open the app, follow the sync checks.
Can I export all my Capture data?
Yes. Open Settings > Export settings > Export all data. Save the ZIP file in a location you can find again.
The archive contains a JSON file with your records and folders for attachments and destination thumbnails. Keep it as a separate copy of your data. This export does not provide an automatic restore or import flow.
Export to other apps
Which apps can I export to?
Capture supports note apps, task managers, calendars, read-later services, and other destinations. It can also send content to a Siri Shortcut.
Open the destination directory for the current list. Each guide explains supported content, setup fields, platform support, and limits.
How do I add or change an export destination?
Open Settings > Export settings. Choose Configure if you have no destinations, or Add new destination if you already have some. Choose an app and complete its settings.
You can also choose Add all installed apps where available. Some destinations need extra fields, an API token, or access permission. Open an existing destination to change its settings.
Use the setup guide for your app to check the required fields.
Why does an export fail or open the wrong place?
Check the guide for the destination, then check these items:
- Make sure the destination supports your device and this type of content.
- For exports that open another app, install and open that app at least once.
- Check the destination fields, such as list, folder, vault, or calendar.
- For online services, check the connection and access token. Allow any required device permission.
First test with a short text capture. If it still fails, contact support with the destination, device, and exact error. Do not send API tokens or passwords.
Why does Obsidian say "Vault not found" or fail to append?
In Capture's Obsidian destination settings, enter the exact vault name or vault ID. Open that vault in Obsidian on the device you are using.
File Path is a path inside the vault, such as Inbox/. Do not enter a full disk path there. Absolute Path overrides Vault and File Path, so leave it empty unless you need that option.
To add text to an existing note, turn on Append and use a path that points to that note. Use Start on a new line to separate entries. Append takes priority over Overwrite.
For daily notes, select Create daily note. Check the same vault and destination settings on each device. See the Obsidian guide for all options.
Why does my exported capture not include its image or PDF?
Not every destination accepts every attachment type. Some accept only text and links. Obsidian export, for example, does not send attachments.
Check the supported content in the destination guide. If needed, share the attachment through the system share sheet to an app that accepts it. Use Export all data to save a separate copy of Capture's stored attachments.
Why does a capture disappear after export?
Check Automatically archive after export in Settings > Export settings. When this is on, exported captures can move out of your active list into Archived.
Open Archived to find them. Choose Restore to return an archived capture to the active list. Turn the setting off if you want captures to stay in the active list after export.
Can I send a note straight from the editor?
Yes. Enable Export from editor in Export settings. On iPhone or iPad, press and hold the submit button to choose a destination. On Mac, right-click the submit button.
This sends the editor content directly to the destination instead of first saving it to your inbox.
Voice notes
How do I use Voice Notes?
Voice Notes needs iOS 26, macOS 26, or visionOS 26, plus support on your device.
Open Settings > Voice Notes, enable Voice Notes, and download a supported language. Select the downloaded language as your default. Allow microphone access when asked, then use the microphone in the capture field.
On Mac, you can also set a Voice Notes Hotkey. Apple Watch uses its own dictation flow.
Why is my language missing, or why will Voice Notes not start?
Open Settings > Voice Notes and check the available languages. Capture gets the supported language list from Apple's speech system. A language that is not listed cannot be downloaded through Capture.
Download a supported language while online, select it, and check microphone access in device settings. Allow enough storage for the model. After the download, the model can run on your device without an internet connection.
Lists and editing
How do I organise captures into lists?
Use the list menu or sidebar to create a list. Use a capture's Move to list action to put it in that list. You can also choose a list when you create a capture.
In Settings > Preferences, set Default list name to choose the list shown at launch. Enable the "All" option to see captures from your lists together.
If you enable List shortcut, type # followed by a list name in the editor to select it. This selects a list; it does not add a separate tag to the capture.
How do I rename or delete a list?
Open the list's context menu in the sidebar. On a touch device, press and hold the list name. On Mac, right-click it. Choose Rename or Delete.
Deleting a list also deletes the captures in it. Move captures that you want to keep to another list before you delete it. Read the confirmation message before you continue.
What do the swipe actions do? Can I change them?
In Settings > Preferences, check Leading swipe action and Trailing swipe action. These settings control what happens when you swipe a capture in the list.
The default actions are Share and Archive. You can change them to suit how you use Capture. Open a capture to use its actions if you do not want to swipe.
Can I recover a deleted capture?
First check Archived. An archived capture is still stored, and you can choose Restore to bring it back.
Delete is different from Archive. Capture does not have a Recently Deleted list. A deleted capture cannot be restored through that list. Check any copy you exported to another app or saved in an earlier data export.
Use Archive when you want to clear your active list but keep the capture.
Why does sorting by modified date ignore the date I entered?
Modified date is the time when you last changed the capture. Creation date is the time when you first saved it. The start date inside the capture is a separate value.
Changing a start date counts as an edit, so it can move the capture when you sort by Modified date. That sort does not put captures in order by their start dates.
Can I turn automatic date, link, or phone number detection off?
Yes. Open Settings > Preferences. Change Automatically detect date, Automatically detect URL, or Automatically detect phone number.
Review detected dates before you export a capture to a task manager or calendar. The destination controls how it uses the date.
Can I stop the keyboard from opening automatically?
Open Settings > Preferences and turn off Automatically show keyboard.
On iPhone and iPad, Keyboard return key controls what Return does. Check this setting if Return adds a line break when you expected it to submit the capture.
Why are smart list suggestions unavailable?
Smart list suggestions use Apple Intelligence and need a supported device and operating system. In Settings > Preferences, check Smart list suggestions. Its status can explain whether the device is not eligible, Apple Intelligence is off, or the model is not ready.
You can still choose a list yourself when suggestions are unavailable.
Shortcuts and automation
How do I open Quick Capture on my Mac?
Open Capture Settings on Mac and set the keyboard shortcut for Quick Capture. Press that shortcut while you work in another app to open the capture field.
In Preferences, enable Menu bar to keep Capture running when you close the main window. Enable Launch at login if you want it to start when you sign in to your Mac.
Can I use Siri, Shortcuts, widgets, or the Action button?
Yes. In Apple's Shortcuts app, search for Capture actions. You can create captures and use actions to find, move, or archive them. Make a shortcut with the action you need, then assign it to the Action button on a supported iPhone.
You can also add Capture widgets or controls to supported Home Screens, Lock Screens, or Control Center. The available options depend on the device and operating system.
What URL schemes does Capture support?
Use the capture: scheme to open Capture or create a capture from another app. These actions were also documented in the original Help Center.
Create a capture with required content and an optional list:
capture://create?content=Buy%20milk&list=Shopping
Open the inbox:
capture://inbox
Open archived captures:
capture://archived
Open a named list:
capture://list?name=Shopping
URL-encode text and list names. For example, use %20 for a space and %26 for an ampersand. These links trigger actions in the installed app. They are not a web API that returns your captures.
Can I read and manage captures from a script on Mac?
Capture for Mac 2.15 or later includes a command-line helper. With Capture installed in Applications, its path is:
/Applications/Capture.app/Contents/Helpers/CaptureCLI.app/Contents/MacOS/capture-cli
Run the helper without a command to see the available command names:
"/Applications/Capture.app/Contents/Helpers/CaptureCLI.app/Contents/MacOS/capture-cli"
It shows a usage message with the command names. There is no separate help or - command.
For example, this command lists up to 10 captures:
"/Applications/Capture.app/Contents/Helpers/CaptureCLI.app/Contents/MacOS/capture-cli" list --limit 10
Use lists to list your Capture lists, or list - to search captures. The helper returns JSON. It works with Capture's local data on your Mac.
If a tool cannot find the helper, check your Capture version and install location. The URL scheme is another option if you only need to open Capture or create a capture.
Capture Pro
What is free, and what does Capture Pro include?
Capture is free to download and try with 20 captures. Capture Pro removes the capture limit. The free allowance counts captures you create, so deleting a capture does not reset the allowance.
Open Settings > Membership for the plans and prices available to you, including the lifetime option when offered. Prices can vary by region. iCloud sync does not require Pro.
I already paid. How do I restore Capture Pro?
Use the same Apple Account for App Store purchases that you used to buy Capture Pro. Open Settings > Membership and use Restore purchases. Keep the device online while it checks the purchase.
If Pro is still unavailable, contact capture@sir.studio. Include the device, Capture version, and purchase type. Do not buy it again just to try to fix the problem.
How do I cancel my Capture subscription?
For a subscription purchased through Apple, open your device's Apple Account settings and select Subscriptions. Choose Capture and use the cancellation option.
Deleting Capture does not cancel an Apple subscription. A lifetime purchase has no recurring subscription to cancel. See Apple's subscription instructions for the current steps.
